Am i the only one against this plan to retire lots of jerseys? I really think it cheapens the honor. Sure the habs have had tons of GREAT players in the past, but only the best of the best should be retired. If they did 1 a year between now and 2009 it might be alright, but 3 this year and who knows how many after that? Seems kinda rediculous to me. Im not saying these guys dont deserve it, i just think it should be a very elite club since we are a team with so much history. Im a HUGE fan, but i dont want to see Koivu's number retired. Save it for the undisputed league changing players. These players get to join the Hockey Hall Of Fame, which is special enough, they dont need number retirement. Im not saying there arent any habs that were game changing, that dont have their numbers retired yet, im just saying that it should stay as a VERY elite group. When a guy retires, if no player on the habs would ever touch that number, then retire it. When Lemieux retires, no Penguin (or even anyone in the league most likely) is going to touch 66.That is a number that deserves retiring.[/quote:66d90f6d61]

I think that it's about time they start retiring jersey's... It seems that the Team has forgotten about the tradition and honor of retiring jersey's. There are probably a hand full that needs to be retired.

There's a story on this subject in the Gazette today; unfortunately the online version requires a subscription and I refuse to pay for any written content on the internet. It mentions in the intro that Robinson is almost a sure thing, but that's all I can get out of the preview. Anybody else seen this article and is there more speculation on the next retired jerseys?

It is not an habit of the Habs to forget their Legends, they will not forget anyone.

I think all are deserving. Maybe they will all be included in the numbers retired as part of the 100 year celebration. I've also got to go with Bob Gainey. He didn't get all of the publicity of some of the other players but he was the guy who was best at shadowing and shutting down the other team's best offensive threat. Top defensive player.

Red Fisher says Robinson is a sure thing, and that the number 12 worn by Yvan Cournoyer and Dickie Moore should be too. He says they should add Elmer Lach's name to the already retired number 16 (Henri Richard). If you're looking to retire a third number he says Bernie (Boom Boom) Geoffrion.

He also talked about how the Leafs have only retired the numbers of 2 players(no.5 Bill Barilko and no.6 Ace Bailey), but have banners hanging for No.1 Johnny Bower and Turk Broda, No.7 King Clancy and Tim Horton, No.10 Syl Apps and George Armstrong and No.27 Frank Mahovlich and Darryl Sittler. They are regarded as "honoured numbers", but leafs present and future can still wear them.

Any Hab who played the bulk of his career in a Habs jersey and makes the hall of fame should have their number retired. I dont care if we have to start using numbers in the 100's.

From TSN.ca

The Montreal Canadiens on Saturday will unveil the names of the three players who will see their sweater retired during the 2005-06 season.

Yvon Cournoyer's No. 12, No. 19 worn by Larry Robinson and Bob Gainey's No. 23 are expected to be named.

The unveiling is part of the activities leading to the club's Centennial in 2009.

Over the next four seasons the team will retire a series of numbers to mark the 100-year anniversary.

The select group of players whose numbers have already been raised to the Bell Centre rafters include Howie Morenz (No. 7 – retired Nov. 2, 1937), Maurice Richard (No. 9 – retired Oct. 6, 1960), Jean Beliveau (No. 4 – retired Oct. 9, 1971), Henri Richard (No. 16 – retired Dec. 10, 1975), Guy Lafleur (No. 10 – retired Feb. 16, 1985), Doug Harvey (No. 2 – retired Oct. 26, 1985), and Jacques Plante (No. 1 – retired Oct. 7, 1995).

With the possible exception of the New York Yankees, no North American sports team has had as storied and as successful a history as the Canadiens, the oldest team in professional hockey.

The Canadiens have won 24 Stanley Cups and have the most individuals in the Hockey Hall of Fame, with forty-one members inducted since the Hall was built in 1961.

On Tva tonight Jean-Paul Chartrand said that the talk is that Geoffrion and Cournoyer were 2 of them, he did not name the 3rd one.

As someone mentionned some time back, and I think it made a lot of sense, Gainey is a humble and somewhat shy guy, it would be very unlikely, that he would accept such an honour while he is GM of the Montreal Canadiens. I would hope that the 3rd guy would be Toe Blake, but poor old Toe was forgotten well into Alzheimer's disease, he died in poverty, a shame......then my vote would go to Larry Robinson.

I also heard about it going to Geoffrion and Cournoyer but i also wondered why not Dryden. After all, his leafs are in town toninhgt and it 's not like it's Montreal's home opener, so maybe it was planned. i don't think we will ever see Roy's 33 retired

(in montreal) considering how roy never wanted to play in montreal ever again.

Toronto sports Network ( tsn ) seem to think that it's #5 - Bernie Geoffrion , #12 - Dickie Moore / Yvan Cournoyer , #23 - Bob Gainey . That's what I heard anyway .

Definately Stephane Fiset - his highlights were one awful regular season game and replacing Theo in the final game against Carolina in the playoffs

or maybe Olivier Michaud - 0 GAA! 1.00 Save Percentage, Yougnest Goalie To Ever Play For the Habs, Just Send the Kid to the Hall of Fame

Or what about Koivu, coming back from cancer and all. Only thing is he would have to get a new number because number 11 would be retired while he was still with the team. And then if he did really great for the next 10 years he would be the only player to have two sepearte retired numbers.

Seriously, forget about the bitterness, this is a new day, retire Roy. If Edmonton can retire Coffee after his exit, Montreal can retire Roy.

Of all the great canadiens who have yet to have their numbers retired, who do you think is most deserving of the honour?

There are many choices, my suggestions would be : Yvan Cournoyer, Ken Dryden, Dickie Moore, Larry Robinson and Bernie "Boom Boom". If I had to narrow it down to only two I would choose Cournoyer (Dickie Moore had the same number, so I suppose they could do both at once) and Ken Dryden. What are your thoughts?

And if you're not sure, these are the players who've already had their numbers retired:

HENRI RICHARD

GUY LAFLEUR

MAURICE RICHARD

HOWIE MORENZ

JEAN BÉLIVEAU

DOUG HARVEY

JACQUES PLANTE

I've added a poll to your topic, since there seems to be many topics about which one to retire next...

JL.[/quote:301c0b3af3]

Theyre retiring them in chronological order in which they played. Which I think is great.

So a guy like Roy probably will be retired...but just not for a looong time.

which also makes sense because an older guy is more likely to umm die than a younger guy in the near future, may as well enjoy the moment, I was glad to see all 3 guys were able to show up to recieve the honour

bringing in mine and hoser's discussion from the other locked thread:

i was listening to team 990 yesterday and they mentioned that they were going to try and have a lot of their hall of famers that are deserving to have their number retired all raised before 2009 the 100th anniversary

Names that were mentioned: Larry Robinson, Guy Lapointe, Ken Dryden, Bob Gainey, Steve Shutt, Jacques Lemaire, Elmer Lach, Serge Savard and others

Also i have a fast fact for anybody that doesnt know this.

- Including the Builders category, The Montreal Canadiens have 50 Hall of Famers inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame -[/quote:875df9357d]

i wouldnt see gainey's jersey up in the rafters just yet...unless he brought the cup home sooner than expected.

my vote would be to:

robinson

dryden

-Matt[/quote:875df9357d]

Gainey is the greatest defensive forward to ever live (Cept Bonk ), why wouldn't his jersey be retired?

And ya Robinson's will definatly be retired (Best defensive defenseman ever?), Dryden's might or might not (He onlyplayed 8 seasons, although he did a hell of a lot of winning in them) next season, but definatly before 09.

I'd like to see:

Bob Gainey (Best defensive forward ever)

Larry Robinson (Best defensive defenseman ever)

Steve Shutt (Greatest Garbage Goal Scorer Ever)[/quote:875df9357d]

no insult to gainey or his greatness, id love to see his jersey up in the rafters...and i know merrit is a big factor. but personally id rather have an older player like dryden get his honours before gainey does.

sorry for the multiple quotes: just wanna get the whole discussion on here

i defenitly wanna see #22 Steve Shutt retired within the next 2 years, but then Begin would have to give up his number :D

not next year but the year (2008) after i'd say Shutt, Gainey and Robinson will be retired

the hardest thing to imagine is to see koivu 60-75 years old and he's seeing his jersey getting retires.... he'd look so old :D

Ken Dryedn's famous #29 should be retired now, not next year or the year after. This Saturday vs. Pittsburgh would be ideal. The greatest goalie the NHL had in the 1970s.

I'd go along with that (and voted as soon as I came on this thread). If retiring #29, you'd also have to consider Charlie Hodge [backup to Jacques Plante (how can you compare?)] who won 2 cups (65 and 66) and the Vezina twice (64 and 66, I think).
